The people of Mathiveri are peace-loving, open, friendly and welcoming. Tourism is gaining in popularity here and as the island opens up for more markets, people are developing new and innovative ways to ensure that guests to the island enjoy a memorable stay while still retaining the feel and ambience unique to island life.
The island itself it quite small, about 480 by 300m and has three beaches including a bikini beach and a picnic island which can even be reached swimming although caution is advised due to rapidly changing currents in the area.
The island has an elected Island Council governing administrative affairs of the island, police station, a school and a Health Centre. Football is the preferred sport among locals while futsal and handball are also very popular.
One website cites Mathiveri means upper portion and derived its name from the position of the island at the North of the Atoll. In Dhivehi usage, the name also means exalted or revered.
